Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father's death as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a little girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school there. The school she was attending after only two years in order to pursue a career as an actor. This was not an easy path to pursue. Although she got a job in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and moved back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a steady actor. She earned money by working during the day in the ushering department. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
